FAQFrequently Asked Questions
Is IDEAS based on a school model that works??YES, IDEAS IS BASED ON THE NEW TECHNOLOGY HIGH SCHOOL model that was started in California. There are now 11 schools across the national that have successfully replicated New Tech High. 100% of New Tech graduates have earned the proper credits to enter the California University System. 96% go on to some form of post-high school education (as compared to 38% in the rest of their California school district). And, New Tech students are getting into places where you might not normally expect them to be accepted based solely on test scores and GPA....because they can not only check off that little box on the application that says they went to a specialized high school but they also have college credits on their transcripts, internships, community service, senior projects, and can show their proficiency by giving access to their digital portfolio. Click here to go to the New Tech Foundation to find out more about the New Tech model and read articles from various sources about their huge success.
My student isn't interested in a technology-related career. Why would they want to attend?TECHNOLOGY IS A TOOL, NOT THE FOCUS. The focus of IDEAS is Project-Based Learning and Team Teaching...NOT technology. Our program will offer a broad array of choices and will meet or exceed 4J graduation requirements. We believe our program will be beneficial for every student. However, we also believe that in the world of the 21st century, it is important for all students to be able to use technology effectively. The curriculum we plan to offer will create a well-rounded graduate who is proficient at using modern tools. Most will go on to become real estate agents, psychologists, entrepreneurs, and every other imaginable career. We expect that only a small percentage of students will be considering a career in high-tech fields.
Will the staff have special training in project-based learning?YES. Our teachers WILL have received special training in turning the traditional classroom subjects into challenging, real-world projects and problems. For students, that means everything they learn has meaning and purpose.
What about the 3 Rs?READING, WRITING, MATH, SCIENCE, HISTORY, AND OTHER CORE SUBJECTS are key to preparing students for their futures. Parents shouldn't fear that all this technology or "new methods" overshadow the three Rs. Students will fulfill all district requirements, and some extra ones specific to IDEAS. And, they need not sit behind a computer screen all day - extracurricular organizations will include clubs, dances, and off-campus trips.
Isn't this going to be expensive? How are we going to fund the technology?IDEAS HAS RECEIVED A START-UP GRANT OF $340,000 FROM THE NEW TECH FOUNDATION.
In addition, partnerships are already being forged with local business, national
companies, community groups, and government institutions.
