Global Literature
Type of Credit: LA
Credit Hours: 1 per full year (A/B schedule)
This course is a journey that
takes two paths. One path explores the nature of literature as an art form:
its many modes and distinguishing artistic characteristics. The other path

cultures. Students examine important issues in cultures across the globe,
read a myriad of genres–poems, plays,
short stories, and novels–and write in a variety of modes exploring

ends with the journey coming full circle, back to an exploration of the students’ own
culture and how that culture shapes who they are and their understanding
of others.

Literature of the Americas*
Prerequisite: Must be enrolled in NIHS
Type of Credit: LA
Credit Hours: 1 per full year (skinny schedule)
This course of study begins with the region of the Americas and is organized
loosely chronologically and thematically to facilitate integration with History
of the Americas. We will study novels, poetry and short stories from peoples
and cultures of the Americas. Our study includes familiarizing students with
periods of culture and literature: Classicism, Romanticism, Transcendentalism,
Naturalism, Realism, and Modernism. We discover the Bible’s influence
on literature of the Americas by closely examining biblical allusions in
the texts we read this year.
History of the Americas*
Prerequisite: Must be enrolled in NIHS
Type of Credit: SS
Credit Hours: 1 per full year (skinny schedule)
History of the Americas is year one of a two-year course sequence. The first
year will focus on regional study; the second year will be devoted to the
study of the 20th century. The units are: Economic and Social Development
in the Americas from mid-19th to mid-20th Centuries; United States Foreign
Policy in Latin America 1898-1945; The Mexican Revolution 1910-1940; The
Great Depression in the Americas; The Second World War and the Americas;
United States Foreign Policy, 1945 to 1995; and the USA Civil Rights Movement,
1945 to 1995.
Information Technology in a Global Society*
Prerequisite: Must be enrolled in NIHS
Type of Credit: SS
Credit Hours: 1 per full year (skinny schedule)
Information technology in a global society focuses on evaluating the impacts
of the digital revolution. Students will explore the cultural, environmental,
and economic effects of information technology, and will also investigate
and interpret the influence of IT on organizational structures in an international,
social context. Through critical analysis of the advantages and disadvantages
of IT, students will examine and debate the social and ethical issues which
emerge from its expanding global footprint. Students will increase their
understanding of and proficiency with a specific IT application by designing,
testing, and implementing an IT solution for a specific client and end-user.
In addition, after thoroughly researching topical IT issues related to business,
health, and social hierarchies, students will synthesize clear, cohesive,
and well-supported oral and written arguments from the perspectives of multiple
stakeholders. Through this work, we will systematically cultivate a deeper
understanding of and appreciation for the ever-increasing power and scope
of IT applications. Ultimately, our work should instill an informed respect
for the diverse ramifications of our technological inventions.
Extended Application
The Extended Application is a State of Oregon graduation requirement. NIHS
students will conduct this work over two years, beginning junior year. In
this project, students will apply and extend their knowledge in new and complex
situations related to the student’s personal and career interests and
post-high school goals through critical thinking, problem solving, or inquiry
in real world contexts. Students’ Extended Application work will be
monitored weekly by the NIHS staff and mentored regularly by a community
member of their choosing.
Creativity Action Service*
Prerequisite: Must be enrolled in NIHS
CAS is an NIHS graduation requirement that all students complete 150 hours
of activities in areas of Creativity, Action, and Service. Students may begin
this work the summer after sophomore year. Participation in CAS encourages
students to share their aptitudes and interests with others, while developing
understanding, concern, and the ability to work cooperatively with others
in their communities.
