Musical Theater ClassHave you ever wanted to be “On Broadway”? This is where it can start. Actors, singers, dancers of all levels (especially beginners) are welcome in this class that gives you the chance to develop skills in these areas in a friendly environment. In addition to jazz music, musical theatre is the only other art form created in the United States. We will study key productions that provided turning points in the development of the form and the artists who created them. From an academic appreciation of the past, present, and future of musical theatre, we will then become audience members listening to and viewing great performances in the form via audio recordings and filmed and live productions. Distinguished interpretations of songs will be compared and contrasted. Our journey continues allowing us to become practitioners in the field, learning by rehearsing and performing scenes from the great works requiring us to develop characterizations through dialogue, song, stylized movement, and/or dance. The concept of the lyrics and music of a song as powerful acting tools is a central element of our work. Students will be prepared to audition successfully for roles in musical theatre with a repertoire of songs displaying their vocal and dramatic skills. Final performance projects are presented to an invited audience in our Drama Workshop room.
