Overview of the Educational Program

Integrating Academics & Arts

The Academy of Arts combines arts and academics in a way in which the two support and complement each other. This combination creates a powerful learning experience, using the arts as a web to unite all areas of curriculum.

Core academics feature a rigorous college-preparatory program including math, science, social studies, and world language. Our school is committed to encouraging all students to think creatively and independently, to question, and to be active participants in their education and their community.

The Arts as a Model

The arts provide a model for lifelong learning. Artists use a learning cycle in their craft: a process which includes planning, rehearsal, production, assessment, performance, and reflection. This cycle trains students to be persistent, to develop craftsmanship, and practice essential thinking behaviors that are the key to success in school and in life.

The process by which we learn art is a fundamental way of learning and transferable to any discipline. Our teachers infuse their curriculum with arts-based skills and strategies that have lasting and practical applications. Students make connections between learning experiences that make the learning relevant, meaningful, and academically rigorous.

A Culture of Academic Achievement

Students at the Academy of the Arts will take a full, college-preparatory course load. All students will acquire the coursework, knowledge, and skills necessary to succeed in post-secondary education and the workplace. High standards and a culture of reflection and revision require students to strive for their personal best.

Personalized and student-centered curriculum create a sense of pride and ownership for students. Thoughtfully planned curriculum will meet the needs of our diverse student population to ensure that all students can choose college after graduation.

Academic Partnerships

In addition to studying with our faculty, students will have the opportunity to work with a variety of professional artists. We are developing productive partnerships with community arts organizations who will be collaborating with us in the classroom and in the community including:
• Eugene Symphony
• Lord Leebrick Theater
• Willamette Repertory Theatre
• UO Museum of Natural History and Culture
• UO Intermedia Department

Culture and Connections

Our school is a collaborative environment of co-creators focused on preparing for unlimited future possibilities. We embrace the rich individual and cultural experiences of the people in our school and community.

The relationships we form among students, families, community partners, and teaching mentors strengthen the individual. Interactions with artists, designers, performers, UO faculty, and other community members will give students opportunities to create public products. Internships, guest artists, parent and community partnerships, and a variety of workplace learning opportunities are the foundations of students’ real-world experiences.
