March 2008

Dear Students, Parents, and Guardians:

I would like to start off by saying how proud I am of our students and the work they are doing with our staff. Several weeks ago students were asked to choose an action committee they would like to join. There were several committees to choose from, each with a distinct purpose. The committees were web page redesign, art integration, link crew, student artwork, senior project topics and several others. Every Wednesday during Connections the students will meet with their assigned teacher to work in these committees.

Many of our student government members are now serving on the North and AoA site councils. Some of the members were also involved in reading a small learning communities grant that North Eugene High School is applying for. Part of making high school meaningful for students is to encourage them to take an active role in their education both academically and socially. The more connected students feel to their school the more likely they are to be successful.

The Winter Formal was a huge success this year. Several hundred students attended this year’s dance and had a great time. A group of students from all three small schools under the direction of Kay Graham decorated the cafeteria for the evening’s festivities. The theme for the dance was a “starry night” and many of our students attended in their best attire.

Cell phones and MP-3 players have become a problem during instructional times. Students are attempting to use their communication devices while class is in session. Please speak to your student regarding his/her cell phone usage during school hours.
