Read Right Program

Every new student is tested

Every new student entering North is tested for reading proficiency and will be enrolled in the Read Right program if deemed necessary. Additionally, students may choose to enroll if they want to improve their already strong reading skills. Read Right will improve skills regardless of the level already achieved. It is the policy at NEHS that students enrolled in Read Right must complete the program in order to graduate from tthe Read Right class.

About the program

READ RIGHT is a unique approach to teaching reading that enables students with reading problems to improve their readings skills in a relatively brief amount of time.

READ RIGHT is aimed at students who, though they may have had effective systematic, explicit phonic instruction, still don’t read well enough to perform at a high—or even adequate—academic standard. For these students the issues are frequently fluency and comprehension, and we have demonstrated success in positively impacting these problem areas.

The READ RIGHT system of instruction integrates knowledge from brain research, learning theory, and reading theory and is consistently successful in permanently eliminating reading problems.

READ RIGHT has been used successfully with many categories of students including those enrolled in Title 1 programs, with students classified as dyslexic, ADD or learning disabled, and with students for whom English is a second language.

At North Eugene High School, READ RIGHT has also been effective in improving the reading skills of high performing students – those already enrolled in AP courses and with strong academic performance.

READ RIGHT has been well tested with projects implemented at over 293 sites with more than 1,208,000 hours of tutoring to date. Elementary, middle and high school students have all become excellent readers through READ RIGHT tutoring.

READ RIGHT helps students significantly improve their reading skills when alternative approaches are showing very slow or no progress. Consequently, when measured by cost per unit of reading advancement, READ RIGHT is the most cost-effective investment a school can make to help students who have fallen behind in reading.

laughing womanEnglish Language Learners

Our English Language Learner (ELL) program serves NEHS students for whom their primary language is not English and score below certain benchmarks on assessment tests. This program provides specialized curriculum designed to teach ELL students English language skills. These skills include listening, speaking, writing, study skills, content vocabulary and cultural orientation. Most instruction is in English with limited use of native languages. Our goal is English language proficiency as measured by passage of the Oregon State Assessment benchmarks.

Special Education

Educational options and support

The purpose of the Special Education program is to provide appropriate educational opportunities for students who are eligible according to the federal guidelines of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (I.D.E.A.). Determination of student eligibility and placement under I.D.E.A. guidelines is the legal responsibility of the Special Services Team (S.S.T.) at each school.

About the Learning Center

The Learning Center Program has been designed to provide the educational options and support necessary for eligible students to make satisfactory progress toward their educational goals. An Individualized Education Plan (I.E.P.) is written for each student, and an annual review is held to discuss progress and set goals. Small class sizes are essential in order to provide individual support. When a student no longer needs the services of the Learning Center Program in order to achieve school success, the student will be moved into the regular education program. Our goal is to provide students with the skills, the confidence, and the self-motivation that they will need for a successful transition into the world of work, independent living, and further education or training.
