High School Seniors
1. Al Neuharth Free Spirit Journalism Scholars $1,000 (Nat'l Award $50,000)
Eligibility: High School Senior, class of 2010, actively involved in high
school journalism and interested in pursuing a career in journalism and
demonstrating qualities of "Free Spirit". Student must also be
able to attend the entire Al Neuharth Free Spirit Scholarship and Conference
Program scheduled in spring, 2010 to receive the scholarship.

2. Hispanic Scholarship Fund - Scholarship range from $1,000 to $5,000
Eligibility: High school senior, class of 2010, hispanic heritage, US citizen
or legal permanent resident, must submit the FAFSA, minimum GPA 3.0, and
must be enrolling in a US college or university.

deadline for the HSF/General College Scholarship is December 15, 2009 (because
there are several scholarships offered through the Hispanic Scholarship Fund,
scholarship deadlines range from Dec. 15, 2009 until Feb. 28, 2010.
3. Burger King Scholarship $1,000 (approximately 700 awarded)
Eligibility: High school senior, minimum GPA 2.5, working part time at least
15 hours per week, participation in community service, demonstrated financial
need, and planning to enroll in a two or four year college or university
or a vocational/technical school. (Student does not have to be employed
at a Burger Kind restaurant to be eligible, however Burger King employees
may be eligible.)

4. Horatio Alger Scholarship $1,000 to $20,000
Eligibility: US citizen, critical financial need, minimum GPA 2.0, intent
to pursue a bachelor's degree (can begin at either a 2 yr or 4yr institution)
and involvement in community service. Application is available on line
at www.horatioalger.org/scholarships. Application includes biographical
and financial information, one letter of support, employment and extracurricular
information, essays and statements and more.
Deadline All applications and supplemental
material are due no later than 10/30/2009.
5. Coca-Cola Scholars Program 250 scholarships awarded from $2500 to $5,000
per yr.
Eligibility: Current high school senior, US citizen (see app), minimum 3.0
GPA at the end of the junior year, no relation to employees of Coca Cola

6. AXA Achievement Scholarship 62 scholarships from $10,000 to $15,000
Eligibility: high school senior planning to enroll full-time in a 2 or 4
yr college or university in fall of 2010, US citizen or legal resident,
outstanding achievement in community service and/or work, plus adult recommendation.

7. Vegetarian Resource Group $5,000
Eligibility: High school senior, must have promoted vegetarianism in your
school and/or your community. Applicants will be judged on having shown
compassion, courage and a strong commitment to promoting a peaceful world
through a vegetarian diet lifestyle. Other information to provide -- extracurricular
activities GPA, college applied to and anticipated major, favorite subjects,
essay, current transcript, at least three letters of recommendation. For

8. Wells Fargo College Steps Scholarship Sweepstakes 20 $1,000 scholarships
Eligibility: Open to any current US resident who is a high school senior
during the 2009-2010 school year and who is enrolled in the College Steps
Program. Employees of Wells Fargo, immediate families and household are
not eligible. Must enter, between July 1,'09 and May 30, 2010. Visit the

9. College Prowler Monthly "No Essay" Scholarship
$2, 000.
Eligibility: Must be legal resident of the US or an international student
with a valid visa. Open to all high school, college and graduate students
and those planning to enroll within 12 months of winning scholarship. Only
one entry per month. Applicant must submit via College prowler's web site:

10. Gates Millennium Scholarship Award amount variable/up to full scholarship
Eligibility: Students are eligible to be considered for a GMS scholarship
if they:
* Are African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian and Pacific
Islander American, or Hispanic American;
* Are a citizen/legal permanent resident or nationals of the United States;
* Have attained a cumulative GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale (un-weighted);
* Will be enrolling for the first-time at a U.S. accredited* college or university
as a full-time, degree-seeking, first-year student in the fall of 2010; or
GED
* Have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community
service, extracurricular or other activities;
* Meet the Federal Pell Grant* eligibility criteria; and
* Have all three forms (Nominee Personal Information Form completed by the
student, Nominator Form completed by an educator familiar with the student's
academic record and a Recommender Form completed by a person familiar with
the student's leadership and community service) submitted by the deadline.
The Gates Millennium Scholars Program (GMS), established in 1999, was initially
funded by a $1 billion grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
The GMS program is more than just a scholarship. The GMS program offers Gates
Millennium Scholars with Academic Empowerment (ACE) services to encourage
academic excellence; mentoring services for academic and personal development;
and an online resource center that provides internship, fellowship and scholarship
information.
The goal of GMS is to promote academic excellence and to provide an opportunity
for outstanding minority students with significant financial need to reach
their highest potential by:
*Reducing financial barriers for African American, American Indian/Alaska
Native, Asian Pacific Islander American and Hispanic American students with
high academic and leadership promise who have significant financial need;
*Increasing the representation of these target groups in the disciplines
of computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics,
public health and the sciences, where these groups are severely underrepresented;
*Developing a diversified cadre of future leaders for America by facilitating
successful completion of bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees;and
*Providing seamless support from undergraduate through doctoral programs,
for students selected as Gates Millennium Scholars entering target disciplines.
The GMS Scholarship Award Provides:
*Support for the cost of education by covering unmet need and self-help;
*Renewable awards for Gates Millennium Scholars maintaining satisfactory
academic progress;
*Graduate school funding for continuing Gates Millennium Scholars in the
areas of computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics,
public health or science;
*Leadership development programs with distinctive personal, academic and
professional growth opportunities.

*Funded more than 13,000 Gates Millennium Scholars since the inception of
the program
*Obtained a 79.9% graduation rate in five years*
*Supported Gates Millennium Scholars enrolled in more than 1,500 colleges
and universities
*Supported Gates Millennium Scholars representing 50 states and five outlying
areas
*Graduated over 5,000 Gates Millennium Scholars since the program's inception
*Five year retention rate of 87.7%*

11. American Fire Sprinkle Association (AFSA) Scholarship 10 $2,000 awards
This essay contest is open to high school seniors who will be attending a
college, university or trade school in the U.S. starting with the fall
2010 semester. No GPA requirement. This scholarship is not based on financial
need. No essay requirement, instead students must read an essay about automatic
fire sprinklers and answer a 10 question multiple choice test.
Eligibility: Must be a US citizen and applications will only be accepted
on line through the AFSA scholarship web site http://www.afsascholarship.org
Deadline: May 3, 2010 at 12:00 noon CDT
12. Oregon Student Assistance Commission (OSAC) 2010-2011 Scholarship Application.
Over
400 different scholarships are listed in this one application workbook. The
OSAC scholarship application season is November '09 through February 2010.
Students can compete for as many as 20 scholarships using the OSAC electronic
application know as the eAPP at www.GetCollegeFunds.org.
Time line: Monday November 2, 2009 - eApp Available on line at www.GetCollegeFunds.org Paper copy of OSAC workbook will be available for seniors Tuesday evening
9/22/2009 at the Jr/Sr night. Recommend that students start their Activities
Chart and the four required Personal Statements. These personal statements/essays
cannot exceed 150 words each.
Eligibility: High school Senior, Oregon resident, Class of 2010, US citizen
or eligible non-citizen in the US intending to become a permanent resident
required for most, but not all, scholarships.
Essay #1 Explain your career aspirations and your educational plan to meet
these goals.
Essay #2 Describe a challenge or obstacle you faced in the last ten years.
What did you learn about yourself from this experience?
Essay #3 Describe a personal accomplishment and the strengths and skills
you used to achieve it.
Essay #4 Explain how you have helped your family or made your community a
better place to live. Please provide specific examples. Copy of Activity
Chart available in the Career Center.
7th semester transcript must be included also.
Deadline: There are two deadlines. Early Bird Deadline Tuesday, February
16, 2010 and Final Deadline March 1, 2010.

13. Oregon School Employees Association OSEA
Guy Davis Scholarships $1250. each and Past Presidents Scholarship $1500.
Eligibility: High School Senior, Class of 2010, minimum GPA 3.0 through first
semester of 12th grade and must have at least one parent (including stepparent),
grandparent, sibling, aunt, uncle or legal guardian as sponsor. Sponsor must
be a member in good standing of the Oregon School Employees Association (OSEA).
Application is available in the Career Center.
Deadline: Application, essay, and transcript must be received at the Salem
OSEA office on or before March 1, 2010
14. Union Plus Education Foundation Scholarship $ 500 - $ 4,000
Eligibility: Union members**, spouses and dependent children of union members,
High School Senior, Class of 2010, who will be attending an accredited
college, university, community college or technical or trade school during
the 2011-2011 school year. GPA of 3.0 or higher is recommended. Awards
will be based on academic achievement and potential, character, leadership,
social awareness, career goals and financial need.

15. MENSA Education and Research Foundation (MERF) 2009 -10 Scholarship
Essay Contest
General Awards range from $300. to $1,000.
Eligibility: High school Senior, must be intending to enroll in an accredited
US institution of post-secondary education in 2010-2011 academic year. Awards
are made on the basis of an essay of no more that 550 words, describing your
career, vocational or academic goals. It is not necessary that the applicant
be a member of MENSA. See application form for additional qualifications
for national awards: studying aeronautical engineering or an aerospace field,
study for a career in education, undergraduate liberal arts degree, journalism,
physics, chemistry and female student with focus in journalism.

16. AES Engineering Scholarship $500
Eligibility: High school senior. AES is offering a scholarship that will
be awarded on the basis of character, as determined by the essays that
are submitted. Applicant is not required to be taking engineering courses
to be eligible. Submit an essay of no more than 1,000 words (essay questions

19. Letters About Literature Awards vary ($50. to $10,000)
The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, in partnerships with
Target sponsor this scholarship. Contest is open to legal residents of
the US who are enrolled as a student in grades 4 - 12 during the 2009-10
school year.
Select a fiction or non fiction book, a short story, poem, essay or speech
(no song lyrics) you have read and about which you have strong feelings.
Then write a personal letter (not a fan letter or book report). High school
entries (level three) should be no less than 500 words and no more than 800
words. One entry per student. Entries will be judged on the following criteria:

Eligibility: High school students, enrolling in accredited college or university
within the next five years. These scholarships are awarded randomly to
college-bound high school students regardless of GPA or test scores. To

each drawing, students are welcome to apply again for the next quarterly

21. 2010 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards
State Award $1,000 National Award $5,000
Eligibility: Open to students grades 5 through 12 as of Oct. 31.2009. Participation
in volunteer activity that occurred at least in part during the 12 months
prior to the date of application. Not open to students with Prudential, NASSP,
CSFA affiliation.
